Policy Priorities

The Law Center has at its core a long-term plan to prevent and end homelessness and protect homeless persons’ civil and human rights.  Its top priorities include:

•  Preventing homelessness by enforcing and making permanent the Protecting Tenants at Foreclosure Act.

•  Strengthening federal education protections for homeless children, and ensuring local compliance with existing law.

•  Working to implement expanded housing protections in the Violence Against Women Act to include other federal housing programs.

•  Promoting constructive alternatives to the criminalization of homelessness, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and the U.S. Interagency  Council on Homelessness.

•  Holding the U.S. government accountable to international human rights standards by promoting treaty ratification and recognition of the human right to housing.

•  Protecting Title V of the McKinney-Vento Act to ensure federal surplus properties continue to be used to help millions of homeless people each year.

•  Securing increased federal funding for affordable housing.
